Shakeology
What do you need to eat to match the nutrition in only ONE serving of Shakeology?
Beachbody is describing it’s new product, Shakeology, as “Nutrition Simplified.” It has helped people to:
1) Lose weight, 2)Feel Energized, 3) Improve digestion and regularity, 4) Lower Cholesterol and 5) Tastes delicious*
According to Beachbody’s Shakeology website, “This daily nutritional shake helps your body gently eliminate toxins more efficiently while allowing for better absorption of the essential nutrients you need.*” It also comes in 2 flavors: Chocolate and GreenBerry.
(*These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.)
Now, I could go through and explain all of the science behind each product but if you really want to know about it, feel free to go to www.shakeology.com/1tinakline or click the link under our Beachbody links on the right. But let’s really keep it simple!
Shakeology contains several ingredients that you would normally have to purchase seperately including:
1) Whey protein and essential amino acids- and not just any whey protein but a whey protein isolate which has been proven to be the most absorbable sources for your body to help build lean muscle . These help build and keep lean muscle as well as promote calmness, level blood sugars and curb hunger pangs and cravings.
2) Vitamins - Shakeology provides 23 essential vitamins and minerals to your body in one shake. Go ahead and take a look at how many vegetables you’d have to eat to include what is in this shake! YIKES!
3)Prebiotics and Digestive Enzymes – Prebiotics support the growth of “good” bacteria in your digestive tract which in turn will help you absorb more nutrients from your foods. Digestive Enzymes assist with the breakdown of foods. So if you body can break it down better AND absorb more nutrients because of a healthy digestive system, you will FEEL better and become healthier!
4)Antioxidents and Phytonutrients – Antioxidents protect the body’s cells from free radical damage (you get this just from being alive) which ages your body (think of a cut apple being left on the counter!) and phytonutrients can help prevent a wide array of degenerative conditions. Taking both together works better than individually (according to studies).
So, that’s the science behind Shakeology…but what you really want to know is – DOES IT WORK? WHAT DOES IT TASTE LIKE? WILL IT HELP ME? So here’s what Bryun and Tina say:
Tina’s input:
Being totally honest, when I first heard about the product, I thought, “So what! Too expensive. I already take a good multi-vitamin and other supplements and I’m good.” Then I tried Shakeology (I try to keep an open mind!)
I first tried it at the Coach’s Summit. Because I had no time to get lunch, I had several Shakeology samples for lunch – about 8 1 oz cups to be exact, which is 1 serving size of Shakeology. I was delicious (it really is) especially when the Greenberry was mixed with a little OJ and the chocolate was mixed with peanut butter and banana. It was good plain (both flavors) but I like it mixed better.
I was not hungry for the entire afternoon and I normally eat every 3 hrs like clockwork. It was about 3 hrs later that Shakeology began to “gently eliminate toxins” from my system.
This wasn’t a bad thing and, luckily, something I expected. However, I always try to warn people to expect it to start working right away. Since this first “cleansing” period, I have been completely regular (a little TMI, I know) something I have not been in over a year.
Since Summit, I have had a Shakeology shake (chocolate with a tsp of natural peanut butter and 1/2 a banana mixed in with water and ice) daily and have NEVER felt better. I wanted to do my own REAL LIFE test of the product so I stopped taking all of my other supplements and ate junk the entire first week of taking it. I still felt great and didn’t gain any weight (didn’t do any workouts at all either). I’m just keeping it real, people!
(This is NOT an endorsed Beachbody testing LOL)
This past week, I’ve gone back to working out and eating right again and feel even better! I have had plenty of energy and just feel good. It’s a little hard to explain other than I just feel “better” than before.
I suffer from a gluten intolerance and hypoglycemia which has kept me from being able to eat 95% of all bread, pasta or flour products unless it’s made from rice. Since I began taking Shakeology that first week, we have had pizza 3 days, Chinese food twice with chow mein and ice cream at least 4 times (ice cream uses gluten for a binder). Not ONCE have I had a stomach issue which is my first symptom of trouble. Just the fact that I CAN eat breads again (if I choose) is worth the cost to me!!!
Personally, I’m sold on the product. It’s cheaper than taking my kids out to McDonalds (or even Jamba Juice) for a meal and I know it’s much healthier for them. Plus, I’ve been able to cut out the cost of my “regular” supplements (I do still take a fish oil a couple days a week) which has saved me $60/month. I’m now a Shakeology Home Direct customer for life!
Doing the math (what can I say, I’ll do anything to save a buck!), it is cheaper in the long run to sign up as a coach and order Shakeology than it would be to just order it. You end up saving nearly $15/mo when you’re a coach, even if you never tell anyone about it. If just one person you know ends up getting it as well, you’ve actually saved nearly $45 on it!
Bryun’s Input:
I wasn’t very good about taking my multivitamins and supplements but I did use meal replacement and protein shakes. This, by far, tastes better than the protein shakes I would make AND gives me the things I would get in a multivitamin. I have only tried the chocolate so far and I either drink it plain, with banana or with various berries. I, too, mix mine with water or skim milk. The shakes have kept me feeling full and I’m no longer skipping breakfast as I used to do (often!)
I found before that I would run out of energy halfway through a workout (doing P90X) and that is no longer an issue. I’m not using any other protein shakes or meal replacements and I still have plenty of energy to get through my workouts without any troubles.
Like Tina, the first day I used the product, I also experienced the “cleaning out” process but after that first time, I’ve had no complaints or issues. Since I began taking it (about 1 week), I have lost 4 lbs and have not altered anything else (still eating the same and doing the same workouts.)
My main benefit has been the increase in my energy level and how much more I seem to be able to do. I’m also a Shakeology Home Direct customer now.

9/29/09 UPDATE: Now you can order Shakeology in the tub OR in individual packets so that you can take your Shakeology on the go! This was the only complaint I had about it. And Beachbody went a step further. For those of you who want to try both kinds but don’t want to buy two tubs (or boxes), you can now order a box of MIXED PACKETS!! What else could we possibly ask for?

Hey everyone that is having a problem with the taste of Shakeology. Stop adding ice and bananas, all that is doing is turning it into a pudding. add one scoop to 12 oz non fat milk and drink it like chocolate milk. Im not a GreenBerry fan but obce again adding ice and fruit and blending it is just making it thicker. Just a tip from someone whos been there:) No matter the taste..this product is truly amazing and has benefited every one of my clients and myself.
By the way, Dole makes some really tasty 100% fruit juices (OJ, mango, banana is good!) and I mixed the Greenberry with that and some ice after my workout today – YUM!!!
So I just finished my first shakeolgy, literally I was drinking it while reading this post… and I have to say that I didn’t really like the taste….I was hoping it would taste better…:( It took me just over an hour to drink it..I was slowing drinking it, I couldn’t drink it any faster. I am going to try it again tomorrow, with some added ingredients… more ice for sure! maybe a banana.
I really want to see the health benefits of this product, but I can hardly handle the taste…its not horrible (i’ve tasted worse) but its not that good either, I have the greenberry flavor.
well hopefully if I add more ingredients, i can make it taste better!
Hey Jen,
I have heard that from a few people about the Greenberry. One even said that she “wasn’t a chocolate person” but really liked the chocolate better than the GreenBerry.
I definately think that Greenberry is one of those (at least for me, personally) that I would always prefer mixed with some fruit.
Wow Jen, This post could have been my post. I, too, am sitting here slowly drinking the Greenberry. I added a 1/4 cup of almond milk to it, but that did nothing. Also I had to make it with nearly 2 cups of water instead of one; that heaping scoop is HUGE.
I am going to try OJ in it tomorrow
Good Luck.
I like it with OJ but I think it’s one of those flavors that really needs something else with it (in my opinion) to spice it up. For me, it’s something to spice up my regular smoothie recipes rather than the other way around – at least with the greenberry. The chocolate I can do with water, ice and the mix and still like it.
But they say people either love greenberry or love chocolate. I’m a chocolate girl!
